Construction passive : mythe ou réalité ?

« Les bâtiments n'ont pas besoin de système de chauffage. » C'est ce qu'affirme notamment, preuve à l'appui, l'ASBL Passiefhuis, une organisation neutre composée d'acteurs et d'institutions de premier plan issus du monde de la construction.

Depuis qu'Al Gore a fait le tour du globe avec sa présentation power-point filmée sur le réchauffement de la planète, les économies d'énergie et la réduction des émissions de CO2 sont devenues des sujets nettement plus politiquement corrects. Il est temps d'examiner l'impact que cette évolution aura incontestablement sur la pratique architecturale.

Dans quelle mesure le concept passif est-il réalisable ? De quoi a-t-il l'air lorsqu'il se matérialise ? Quelles pistes nous faudra-t-il bientôt abandonner ? Et lesquelles devrons-nous emprunter ?

Olivier Henz, associé à l'origine de FHW Architectes, est un architecte qui place depuis toujours l'environnement et l'être humain au coeur de ses préoccupations. Il y a quelques années, il a assisté à un séminaire intensif sur la construction passive au Passiv Haus Institut à Darmstadt, auprès du Dr. Wolfgang Feist, l'inventeur de la théorie des « maisons passives ».

IFMA Foundation Announces International Student of the Year Award

HOUSTON — (March 24, 2010) — The IFMA Foundation is pleased to introduce the International Student of the Year award program, an initiative that was launched at IFMA’s World Workplace 2009 Conference & Expo in Orlando, Fla. The inaugural International Student of the Year award will be presented alongside the annual scholarships awarded at IFMA’s World Workplace 2010 in Atlanta, Ga., and annually thereafter.

Open to students from around the world, the International Student of the Year award will recognize the student who best exemplifies the future of the facility management profession through academic achievement, excellence and enthusiasm for the industry.

“The International Student of the Year award is truly a worldwide competition open to any FM student around the globe,” said IFMA Foundation Executive Director Will Rub. “It is both meaningful and exciting for the IFMA Foundation to introduce this new award as part of its continuing effort to promote and recognize international FM education.”

Providing scholarships enhances the foundation’s mission to identify, fund and promote education and research for the advancement of facility management. In 2009, the IFMA Foundation distributed more than US$84,000 in scholarships to 27 deserving facility management students.

“The future of facility management depends on attracting and retaining bright, dynamic professionals with fresh ideas and a passion for excellence,” said IFMA Foundation Chair Pat Turnbull, MA, LEED AP. “The International Student of the Year award is part of the IFMA Foundation’s effort to recognize achievement in FM education worldwide. I would also like to recognize IFMA Foundation Secretary/Treasurer Stephen Ballesty, as he was instrumental in pulling together the concept, criteria and judging process for this new award.”

For a small application fee — paid by the student’s sponsoring organization — the entry becomes an active participant in the process of recognizing facility management excellence. The sponsor must verify the applicant’s eligibility to ensure the student has met all award criteria.

An international panel of judges will be appointed by the IFMA Foundation’s executive committee to evaluate the award applications. The panel will be chaired by an IFMA Foundation trustee and will consist of a combination of senior facility management practitioners, service providers, consultants and academics.

6th Facility Night in Luxembourg

The themes of 2010 edition are :

Behind the scenes at Franco Dragone (co-founder Cirque du Soleil)

Franco Dragone is the creative "brain" behind the Cirque du Soleil concept. Afterwards he started his own series of astonishing shows that brings him all over the world. "The House of Dancing Water" will have Macao as home base for a period of 10 years. The whole preparation is happening in Belgium, in the famous Alfacam Studio Lint (Antwerp). The presentation will give a view on what's happening behind the scenes during the set up of the "The House of Dancing Water". The big challenge was to dind a place for rehearsal for 75 artists for 14 months : Alfacam built a brand new studio (70m x 40m x 22m) in ... three months, containing all artistic infrastructure, an indoor pool (35 lenght, 40 width), apartments, catering facilities etc. "The House of Dancing Water" will become the biggest water spectacle in the world. Bart Adriaensen is responsible for technical coordination and facilities.

CERN Geneva : the Large Hadron Collider (100m underground) and the surrounding facilities and services for 7000 scientists !

CERN is an abbreviation for Consiel Europeen pour la Recherche Nucléaire. (English : European Organization for Nuclear Research). Based in Geneva since 1954 when the first site was built at the town of Meyrin. It has been growing ever since and now CERN stands for a scientific research center where more than 7000 scientists work from more than 100 countries. The facilities are astonishing, starting from the "old settlement" (1954) up to the most advanced installations such as the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), a gigantic scientific instrument about 100m underground. It is a particle accelerator to study the smallest known particles - the fundamental building blocks of all things. It will revolutionise our understanding, from the minuscule world deep within atoms to the vastness of the Universe.

The presentation will deal with FM & Sercice matters for the whole including the newest on site urbanisation projects. A fascinating story on one of the most impressive sites in the world.

The General Services (GS) Department is a brand new department whose mission is to consolidate the infrastructure of CERN as a global laboratory. With an expected increase of 50% in the number of users in the five next years (bringing it to about 15 000 !), this is far from an easy task.

What is Facility Night ?

IFMA Luxembourg invites you to the leading Facility Management Event in the Benelux Facility Nights are a series of informal seminars and a meeting forum for anyone who has loose or lose ties to Facility Management. For this fourth edition, IFMA Luxembourg is cooperating again with its Belgian partner Ki’ communications.

There are two goals : hoping that they will gain new insights, or that in the meantime personal views will be tested against the speaker’s positions. In addition, and at least as importantly, the evening programme offers ample possibilities to establish interesting contacts with colleagues in an informal atmosphere.

The intention is NOT to teach the subject to the Facility Manager. Other channels are available for this. The target group is Facility-, Real Estate and Property Managers and related functions, purchasing managers, financial controllers, etc. both from the private and public sectors as well as the healthcare sector. The event is also aimed at FM-suppliers All selected subjects are looked upon from a facilities management point of view. The sessions begin in the late afternoon and are followed by a cocktail, a very attractively prepared
buffet and a ‘nightcap’ at the open bar.
